Marjanne Goozé. “Der ‘verlorene’ Briefwechsel zwischen Henriette Herz und Friedrich Schleiermacher: Freundschaft, Religion und Nachruf.” “... nur Frauen können Briefe schreiben.” Facetten weiblicher Briefkultur nach 1750. Ed. Renata Dampc-Jarosz and Pawel Zarychta. Berlin: Peter Lang, 2019. 177-190.

The essay investigates the complex intellectual and spiritual friendship between the Berlin Jewish salonnière Henriette Herz and the philosopher and theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher. It analyzes Herz’s significance as interlocutor for some of his most important early theological writings, their study of ancient languages, and her eventual conversion to Protestantism. It also addresses the complexity of dealing with correspondences that are no longer fully extent—Herz copied what she deemed significant in his letters and burnt the originals. The essay argues for the trustworthiness of Herz’s copies based on available correspondences of contemporaries.
