Department Alum Continues to Pursue Diplomacy in Former Soviet Nations

Lynne Tracy

Lynne Tracy has dedicated nearly 30 years to foreign service, including as the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia. Her interest in Armenia and the then-Soviet Union began during her freshman year, at the height of the Cold War. A professor, the late Dr. Joe Barrigan, shared that not enough people understood the Soviet Union.

The comment sparked Tracy to become someone who did understand the complexity of the Soviet Union, creating her own major she called “Soviet Studies” with courses in Russian language, political science, and geography.

Her education at UGA and GSS allowed her to use her diplomatic skills across former Soviet satellite states, including Kazakhstan and Afghanistan. Her impressive resume includes being honored with the Department of State Award for Heroism after a gunman attack in Pakistan. She also is the current nominee as the Ambassador to Russia.
