The University of Georgia’s Morehead Honors College announced a record-breaking number of Boren Scholars, including six undergraduate students from the  Russian Flagship Program in the Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies at UGA. The prestigious scholarship funds study abroad in world regions critical to U.S. security interests.

The six Russian Flagship Boren Scholarship recipients are Sydney Buchanan, Robert Fox, Lauren Harvey, Natalie Navarrete, Dana Newman, and Moriah Thomas.

With eight UGA Boren Scholars awarded in this cycle, the University of Georgia now ranks third in top-performing institutes for Boren scholarships.

The Russian Flagship Program is federally-sponsored and students experience study abroad, cultural activities, and professional internships, and earn prestigious Flagship certification. Students will be provided the language skills, mentoring, and intercultural competence in Russian by graduation.

“The high rate of success and the number of Boren scholarships awarded to our students this year are exceedingly impressive,” said Dr. Victoria Hasko, co-director of the UGA Russian Flagship Program along with Dr. Olga Thomason. “It is gratifying to see the Language Flagship curriculum model thrive at UGA, and we are proud to see the recognition and support that our students have earned through dedication to critical language studies spanning their undergraduate careers,” Hasko added.

The award is granted to students who are studying critical foreign languages and is designed to create vital international language components in students’ education by providing the opportunity to study abroad in critical regions of interest to the US. The Boren Scholars also commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduating in exchange of up to $25,000 in funding.
